iVDR, the New Favorite for Multimedia Storage
-ACARD provides various chip solutions for iVDR
|
 |
Now there is a new choice for multimedia storage. Since May, 2002 Canon, Fujitsu, Hitachi, Phoenix, Pioneer, Sanyo, Sharp and Victor have been promoting iVDR (Information Versatile Disk for Removable usage), a new generation storage interface. It has become your best choice in multimedia storage. A symposium for iVDR was held in Tokyo on December 19, 2006. On the meeting many members like Sanyo, Sharp, Hitachi, Hitachi Maxell, I-O Data, Toyota Motor, Seagate, etc. talked about the trend and application of iVDR. ACARD, one of the members, also presented a series of solutions for iVDR chip, including PCI, IDE, USB, etc. These solutions impressed the members. All expected them to come soon.

 - What is iVDR?
"iVDR " stands for Information Versatile Disk for Removable usage. Two specifications have been set for iVDR, one for the cartridge type designed with consideration for portability and the other for the built-in type which is mounted inside equipment.
- The cartridge type realizes ubiquitous applications with transferring of content made possible between equipment in homes, on vehicles, or in portable equipment.
- The built-in type enables increasing the capacity of built-in hard disks of digital TVs or hard disk recorders easily.
- Both types while being removable, enable large capacity recording and high speed random access which are possible only with hard disk drives.
- Interface is based on Serial ATA and copes with a high speed transfer rate of 1.5 Gbps.
- By using a multiple number of units, the user may easily build up even servers that possess Tera-Byte capacity.
- For protection of contents of videos, audios, etc., SAFIA*1 (Security Architecture for Intelligent Attachment) is used. iVDRs mounting this SAFIA are called iVDR-Secure.
- iVDR application
Especially, iVDR-Secure aims to become a standard media for the realization of an ubiquitous society which processes copyright content of image, music and programs etc. in common over a wide field of AV equipment and PCs including home appliances, mobile equipment, and vehicle mounted equipment.

- What is SAFIA?
This is a content protection technology for digital TVs, digital audio, etc. offered by SAFIA License Group.(http://www.safia-lb.com)。
The technology is acknowledged by the Association for Promotion of Digital Broadcasting (D-pa) and the Association for Promotion of Satellite Broadcasting (BPA) as a "Content protection method for removable recording media, mountable on receiving equipment," and is reflected in the technical report TR-B14 and TR-B15 of the Association of Radio Industries and Businesses (ARIB).
For development or commercializing of iVDR-Secure related equipment, it is necessary to conclude a separate contract with SAFIA License Group and receive SAFIA related specifications.
