Video Format

According to the signal type, video format can be differentiated as analog and digital type. The analog video format includes NTSC, used primarily in North America, PAL in Europe, and SECAM etc., while most mainstream DVRs support these major analog video formats. NTSC is mainly applied in North America and Japan with 4:3 aspect factor, 525 horizontal scan lines for each frame and 30 frames per second. As NTSC is interlaced, each frame is further split into 2 fields, where each field includes 262.5 scan lines and 60 fields per second. The digital resolution of NTSC is D1:720*480. PAL is broadly adopted in Western Europe, China, and India analog video system, where each frame has 625 horizontal scan lines and each second includes 25 frames. The interlaced video also includes 50 fields per second and the digital resolution is D1:720*576. SECAM is the third ranked analog broadcasting television standard. It is defined as similar to PAL only with slight differences in the color-encoding scheme.

Digital video format has the advantage of digital archiving and storage, and can be directly edited without loss in quality over repeated recording. The resolution of digital video would not be limited to standard definition as high definition has been standardized. The ATSC group from the USA has already standardized multiple digital video formats as with the DVB group coming out with similar digital video formats. The following lists the ATSC digital television standards including 18 video formats (among them, 480i60 is similar to the NTSC digital format).

  • HDTV (High definition television)
  • EDTV (Enhanced definition television)
  • SDTV (Standard definition television)
